Barbara Davis (née Smith) of Canton, was born in 1929, in Evanston, Illinois, the only child of Austin H. and Ruth K. Smith. She was Valedictorian of Evanston Township High School and attended Wellesley College on an academic scholarship. While studying at Wellesley she met her husband, Peter J. Davis, a student at MIT, and they were married in Evanston in 1948. Barbara and her husband raised their family while moving frequently during her husband's career as an engineer in the private sector and for the US Government. They began their married life in New York City, followed by moves to the state of Washington, Connecticut, Maryland, Belgium, back to Maryland, then to Washington, DC. They first retired to Virginia where they lived for fifteen years. In 2002, they returned to Connecticut, living in Avon. While living in the Washington, DC, area, Barbara was active in the Wellesley Club of Washington. During the 1970s she volunteered with the National Organization of Women as NOW promoted the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in state legislatures. Barbara is survived by her husband Pete and four children: Peter Joseph, Jr. (Jacqueline), Kenneth Owen (Lalita), Lynn, and Philip; and her grandson, Tantai Angwattana Davis, son of Ken and Lalita. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service, Friday, September 9, 2016, 6 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. The Rev. James Wheeler will officiate.
